home

the afternoon drill –
a walk in the unit corridor
navigating this chair
and that table,
finding an even stride

all the while, visions
in her head
humming along the years
each instant
brings past to present

how much did she miss
when she held her posture
so straight?
dignity is ego

how much did she gain
when she unbuckled the harness
that cinched her so tight?
laughter is grace

Love this, nan. But the last stanza holds an immense truth. Wonderful poem.

Unbuckling the harness would really make a difference, I believe.

ah i think unbuckling and loosening up opens and allows for many things...there are def downfalls in being held too tight...smiles.

So nice when you can just let loose like that and find the laughter and grace!

I have long believed that laughter is the best medicine for much that we experience. Really enjoyed your poem, especially the final stanza.

Our poetry is much like, dancing either rigidly to rules or letting ourselves go into beautiful free form and laughing at our achievements.

Jade, I love this poem. It reminds me of how much we have to gain by just letting go and letting the world come to us. Wonderful!
