Sometimes I stumble upon music that is new to me, and I wonder how in the heck I missed it when it actually came out. So how did I find Porcupine Tree, a band that formed in 1987, and that has been making music since? Blogs plus internet surfing equals new music (to me).NPR's Song of the Day had an interesting new song by Steven Wilson, of a group called Porcupine Tree. I really liked this song, Harmony Korine, and I decided to search out the band on YouTube. What I found was really interesting and varied music, much of which reminded me of one of my old favorites, Pink Floyd. I know not everyone will like it. (I have a distinct memory of my mother telling me to "turn off that druggie music," when I used to listen to Dark Side of the Moon.) Sometimes, however, this kind of music is just the ticket.
Granted, the psychedelia can be a little spooky if you let yourself go there, but I also find something incredibly peaceful and ethereal in some of the background drones and tunes.
So, in addition to the song linked above, here are two YouTube videos, if you have the time:
The Sky Moves Sideways and The Moon Touches Your Shoulder.

You and me both, nan, when it comes to being blindsided by "new" music. And without fail, it's from Greaet Britain. Rufus Wainwright is the only American musician I've been excited by in--what?--3 years now? 4? These guys have a very interesting sound and their story is interesting, too. Obviously serious about their work.
The Sky Moves Sideways...fantastic!

PS - And they have a song titled "Lazarus"...what's not to like? :)
i really like new music!
thanks
I'm very happy that some of my music/blog friends like Porcupine Tree. The only thing better than liking new music is sharing it!
